“If a ruler orders an army to engage in battle, and in the battle one thousand
enemy soldiers are killed, each soldier will experience the negative result of
however many people he killed; but the ruler will incur the negative results of
killing one thousand human beings. People in power can commit immensely destructive
actions in the amount of time it takes to write their signature or push a button.
The protector Nagarjurna used to pray never to become a politician in any of his future
lives because he knew that if he were to gain any worldly authority and power he
would have to take personal responsibility for all the actions he commanded others to perform.”

I was walking along a path overgrown with grass, when
suddenly I heard from someone behind, “See if you
know me?”
I turned around and looked at her and said, “I cannot
remember your name.”
She said, “I am the first great Sorrow whom you met
when you were young.”
Her eyes looked like a morning dew is still in
the air.
I stood silent for some time till I said, “Have you
lost all the great burden of your tears?”
She smiled and said nothing. I felt that her tears had
had time to learn the language of smiles.
“Once you said,” she whispered, “that you would
